The Freddie Mercury tribute concert which, took place just five months after the singer’s death and was held at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium, will be streamed online this weekend.
The location for the concert was a symbolic one as it was the same venue that Mercury would cement his legacy when he single-handedly stole the show at Live Aid in 1985.
The tribute concert was broadcasted across the globe at the time and took place on April 20, 1992, in front of over 70,000 fans with the proceeds going towards AIDS research.
The show delivered a number of moments that even Freddie himself would be proud of such as Elton John and Axl Rose colliding on a duet of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and George Michael’s outrageously good tribute of ‘Somebody To Love’.
It would also see David Bowie and Mick Ronson link up for the final time for a rendition of ‘All The Young Dudes’ that put the world to rights when they showed music had been missing out on since the two parted ways. Later, the duo would also be a part of an ensemble performance of ‘Heroes’.
The concert will air starting at 7pm GMT on Friday, May 15th. Viewers are asked to the World Health Organisation in Mercury’s honour. Google is pledging to match each donation with a $2 donation of their own as part of an ongoing Google/YouTube UN Foundation fundraiser.
