When John Lennon’s debut, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, was released in 1970 it was revolutionary for any number of obvious reasons.
Now the record is set for a mammoth box set reissue to be released on the 16th of April.
The boxset will stretch the record over eight discs, including outtakes, demos, impromptu jam sessions, rarities, as well as a full live recording of Yoko Ono’s backing band session, and much more.
The box set, which includes six CDs and two Blu-Ray audio discs, will also be bolstered by a 132-page booklet documenting the production of the album, as well as ‘War Is Over!’ poster and two postcards.
Included on the eight discs is 87 previously unreleased recordings which will be getting a public airing for the first time ever. It’s the kind of release that acts as a collector’s dream.
Yoko Ono took on the role of creative director for the project which is being fulfilled by the same team behind 2018’s Imagine reissue. “With the Plastic Ono Band albums, John and I liked the idea of this really raw, basic, truthful reality that we were going to be giving to the world,” Yoko Ono wrote in the book.
“We were influencing other artists, giving them courage, giving dignity to a certain style of vulnerability and strength that was not accepted in society at the time. It was a revolution for a Beatle to say, ‘Listen: I’m human, I’m real.’ It took a lot of courage for him to do it.”
Aside from all the noise that surrounded the record, it was the sweet sound that John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector and co. managed to capture in its recording that catapulted it to the iconic status where it remains to this day.
