A rare 1962 Beatles single has generated interest from bidders from across the world and could be sold for up to £9,000.
The seven-inch vinyl single, one of only 250 worldwide, contains ‘Love Me Do’ alongside ‘P.S. I Love You’. According to vinyl specialist Rob Smee, its rare status is also connected to the fact that Paul McCartney’s name is misspelt on the pressing and instead reads ‘McArtney’.
Smee added that the single had caught the eye of many bidders and Beatles fanatics across the globe, especially because the single is “from the very earliest days of the band’s career”.
The single was the first of a handful of vinyl pressings sent to radio and television studios on October 5th, 1962, ahead of the main record release. The fact that it includes an incorrect spelling only serves to make the item more compelling.
The following singles included ‘Please Please Me’ and ‘Ask Me Why’ were sent on January 11th, 1963, and ‘From Me To You’ and Thank You Girl’, which was sent on April 11th, 1963.
“Being one of only 250 it is of particular interest to Beatles’ collectors and the misspelling of Paul McCartney’s name is both authentic and interesting in itself,” Smee explained, per BBC.
The vinyl is scheduled to go on auction at Stacey’s Auctioneers’ sale in Chelmsford, Essex, on Monday, and is predicted to sell for between £7,000 and £9,000.
