The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has discussed the band’s plans for the future and admitted they have “got to draw a line somewhere”.
On October 20th, The Rolling Stones released their new album Hackney Diamonds, including the singles ‘Angry’ and ‘Sweet Sounds of Heaven’. The LP marks their first record of original material since A Bigger Bang in 2005. According to the Official Charts Company, it’s outselling the rest of the top ten combined and looks set to land the legendary group their 14th number one album.
Now, in a new interview with Apple Music 1’s Matt Wilkinson, Richards has lifted the lid on Hackney Diamonds and revealed they have more songs ready to go. However, the guitarist maintained another album is far from finished, and they would have to return to the studio to add new songs rather than relying on leftovers.
When probed upon the follow-up to Hackney Diamonds, Richards responded: “Good question. I think when we recover from Hackney Diamonds, we’ll be giving it a good thought. But the reason these 12 are on it, these are the best. Also, you’ve got to draw a line somewhere.”
He continued: “Some of them, because they’re not totally ready yet, they’re good, but they need a little work. But there’s another one in there, I think maybe with a few more additions. But like I say, at the moment, let me get this one out the way, man.”
Richards’ new comments arrive after Mick Jagger previously disclosed The Rolling Stones had already turned their attention to making another record. “I don’t think it’s the last Rolling Stones album. We’ve got almost three-quarters through the next one,” he told the New York Times.
In a three-star review, Far Out wrote of Hackney Diamonds: “It’s impossible not to get a kick out of these elder statesmen of rock and roll putting their best collective foot forward to see what remains of their creativity. You can call Hackney Diamonds whatever you want, but you have to call it a success.”
