Given that his undeniable influence can be heard throughout The Beatle‘s discography, it’s hardly a surprise that George Martin is often dubbed the fifth Beatles member. After years of working in production, his knowledge of sound and musical arrangements meant that, regardless of the direction the band were moving in, Martin could adapt and bring out the best in them.
The result of Martin’s involvement is what we have today: a vast back catalogue of music that people everywhere still see as some of the best music ever made. The songwriting of Paul McCartney and John Lennon was crucial to its creation, and George Harrison’s guitar playing and innovation were needed. Ringo Starr was a quintessential part of the band dynamic, but none of it would sound anything like it does without Martin. Yes, the fifth Beatle.
It is worth looking at the many songs he produced to understand just how significant his influence was on the band. He met up with the Beatles on June 6th, 1962, after Decca Records had turned them down. Martin decided their songs were subpar but had great promise, so he was keen on helping them out as much as possible. It meant that he was working with the band from the beginning of their recording career, starting their working relationship with him producing and playing piano on ‘Misery’ on the debut album Please Please Me.
Martin went on to produce a total of 188 songs for the band. This makes up most of the band’s discography. Other engineers also lent the Fab Four a hand, particularly on the 30-track-long White Album, but for the most part, it was Martin who was left to ensure that the Beatles were delivering their best. They may have been a different band altogether without him.

One of the most notable producers The Beatles worked with was Phil Spector. Spector played a big part in the production of Let It Be. The band struggled to get the sound they wanted and, on top of George Martin, decided to get some fresh eyes (and ears) into the studio.
Spector was brought in so that he could oversee the album’s production and make some changes to make it more commercially viable. He was able to work with everybody, and his production worked well on many of the songs; however, he was a controversial choice, and his presence was viewed as controversial by both the band and fans.
