Rising star Joseph Quinn, best known for his breakout role in Stranger Things, has exited Bret Easton Ellis’ highly anticipated directorial debut Relapse to take on the iconic role of George Harrison in Sam Mendes’ ambitious Beatles biopic series.
From Rehab to Rock Legend
Quinn was originally slated to play the lead in Relapse, a psychological drama centered on Matt, a man who spirals into paranoia after a stint in rehab following a traumatic event. The film, written and directed by Ellis, promised to explore themes of existential dread and identity, marking the novelist’s transition to filmmaking.
However, Ellis confirmed on his podcast that scheduling conflicts led Quinn to step away from the project when he was offered the opportunity to portray Harrison. “Joseph had been waiting patiently to make this movie,” Ellis said, “but when he was offered the role of George Harrison, it was clear he couldn’t do both. Of course, he made the right choice.”
The Beatles Biopic Series
Sam Mendes’ Beatles project will consist of four standalone films, each focusing on the life and legacy of a different band member. Quinn’s casting as Harrison is the first confirmed role, though rumors suggest Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, and Harry Dickinson are in talks to play Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon, respectively.
